Unusual Battleground
A new script-in-progress by Rahul Varma.

A stage-reading of Rahul Varma’s new play Unusual Battleground will be presented at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences on Sunday May 30, 2010 at 20:30 Room MB 7.265. Montreal playwright Rahul Varma’s latest work is based on recent interviews conducted as part of the Concordia University’s Life Stories of Montréalers Displaced by War, Genocide and other Human Rights Violations project. Directed by Arianna Bardesono, the reading is co-sponsored by the Canadian Association of Theatre Researchers (CATR), the Life Stories Project, and the Canadian Historical Association (CHA).

The commissioning of a new play by Artistic Director Rahul Varma was made possible with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Cole Foundation. The Intercultural Conversations program was established to encourage the production of plays, translations, and writing of commissioned new works that show the multi-cultures of Montreal in dialogue with each other. Productions such as these lead to greater social awareness, understanding and harmony by audiences, with the hopes of changing social attitudes. Priority was given to producing, writing and translating plays that give voice to those cultural communities, represented in Quebec, but not being heard in Montreal and in need of access to a wider audience.

To encourage theatre of varied heritages and social realities, the Cole Foundation provides crucial grants to professional theatre companies to present existing works and create new ones about cultural/ethnic diversity that will inform and stimulate audiences, engage them in a dialogue to improve understanding and assist in breaking down barriers between the many cultures that exist in Montreal.

Stage reading on Sunday, May 30th at 8:30 pm is free of charge. Other staged readings to be announced.
