Sharing Our Stories, Telling Our Lives

This community participatory storytelling theatre project was conceived with and for the English-speaking Black Community in Montreal (ESBC).

The project’s aim is to support the resilience and vitality of the Montreal ESBC, whose over 40,000 members are doubly marginalized in Quebec as English speakers and as visible minorities.

The project was initiated across Montreal over a two-year period from August 2018 through March 2020.

About the Program

Sharing Our Stories, Telling Our Lives aims specifically to invite the English-speaking Black community to tell, preserve, share their life stories as well as structured activities that bring together community members and community-engaged artists.

This also included workshops and a particular focus on giving youth fundamental skills in interviewing, recording and digitally archiving guided conversations with community members.

The culmination of these workshops and training led to the creation of a series of presentations, which will be taking place on several dates over the course of Black History Month, 2020.

We aim to highlight the diversity within the English-speaking Black community, allowing different voices, experiences and life stories to be heard and valued, both within and outside the communities.
