Muslim Awareness Week : Law 21 and Systemic Racism in Quebec

Originally posted January 21, 2021

Teesri Duniya Theatre is organizing a series of online discussion forums and webinars on pertinent social issues, such as systemic racism and sexual violence, in the current moment and in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For Muslim Awareness Week, join Teesri and speakers Ehab Lotayef, Nadia Naqvi and Nour Farhat on Saturday, January 30th, 2PM EST as they speak out agasint Law 21, and Islamophobia in the community.

Law 21 has been promoted as a progressive legal framework celebrating the values of religious neutrality, though its explicit and implicit implications are anything but secular or neutral for minority citizens. This framework reveals the fears and anxieties of the dominant cultural majority over the "issue" of diversity and multiculturalism. In it's aim to uphold state neutrality towards religion, Law 21 prohibits citizens, including Muslim and Orthodox Jewish women, as well as Sikh and Jewish men, from serving as public servants, police, teachers or holding office. Ethno-nationalist mobilization in Quebec that has been rooted in protecting francophone rights has also narrowly defined citizenship and belonging in a way that excludes the vulnerable visible minority.
